“Building a Portfolio as a Design Student: : My Journey So Far”
Introduction
As a student, creating a portfolio can be intimidating. Whether you’re in Fashion, Product, Interior, UX, or Communication Design, a good portfolio is essential to showcase your skills and style. Here’s how I’ve been building mine to reflect both my strengths and potential.
Portfolio-Building Strategies I Use
Selecting Projects with Purpose: I avoid including everything and instead pick pieces that reflect my unique style and interests. For instance, as a Fashion student, I highlight projects that show my aesthetic choices and range, while a UX student might focus on usability case studies. Product and Interior Design portfolios benefit from showing 3D renderings and sketches to convey functionality and aesthetics.Showing the Process Behind Each Project: Employers value the journey as much as the final outcome. I include sketches, brainstorming notes, and any prototypes, whether it’s mockups for a Communication campaign, fabric swatches for a textile project, or wireframes for UX. This approach demonstrates problem-solving skills and creative thinking.
Refining and Editing: I regularly review and polish my portfolio, looking for small ways to improve. For Interior Design and Product portfolios, I focus on details that show craftsmanship, while Communication portfolios benefit from a cohesive visual narrative. The goal is a portfolio that is professional and compelling.
Continuously Updating My Portfolio:My portfolio is a work in progress. Every project and new skill gives me the opportunity to improve it, making it an evolving story that represents my growth as a designer.
