Whether working with fabrics, layouts, 3D models, or digital screens, the basics are crucial to delivering designs that stand out. Here’s how mastering the fundamentals has made a difference for me.

Why Basics Are Essential for Every Design Field

In Fashion and Textile, understanding materials and color combinations is vital; without a grasp of color theory, it’s hard to create cohesive collections. For Interior and Product designers, sketching and composition help in visualizing space and scale accurately. UX and Communication students know that without typography and layout basics, even the best interactive designs can fall short. The fundamentals are like the rules of a game—once you know them, you can break them intentionally for unique effects.

How I’m Strengthening My Basics in Design

Sketching Practice: Whether it’s garments, furniture, or digital layouts, sketching helps me communicate ideas clearly. In my sketchbook, I draw everything from fashion figures to room perspectives to improve my visualization skills. Experimenting with Colors and Textures: In textile design, experimenting with dye and fabric is crucial to learning how textures and colors behave. For digital fields, I practice mixing color palettes digitally, understanding how different colors impact the user experience or the “feel” of a brand. Typography Trials and Layouts: In UX and Communication Design, I play with font pairings and experiment with hierarchy to see how they impact readability and design flow. In Fashion, even small typography on tags and labels matters, and Interior design uses typography in signage and branding, so understanding fonts helps in all these areas.

From Basics to Mastery Mastering these fundamentals has given me the confidence to approach advanced tools and techniques. They form a stable foundation, making every design choice intentional and impactful.
